On this headstone, Joseph Warner was described in 1894 as a Member of the Journalists' Institute (M.J.I.), and in 1921 as a Fellow of the Journalists' Institute (F.J.I.)

Joseph Henry Warner was born at Orchard Street, Oxford in 1854 and baptised at St Ebbe's Church on 12 February. He was the son of the shoemaker Robert Warner and the servant Sarah Lane who were married at Forest Hill Church on 17 October 1841. At the time of the 1861 census Joseph (7) was living at 7 Orchard Street, St Ebbe's with his Irish-born father Robert (52), who was a journeyman bootmaker, his mother Sarah (43), and his siblings John (17), who was a pupil teacher, and Lucy Eliza (9), Mary Alabaster (2), and Charles (three months). He was still living with his parents in 1871, now in Paradise Square.

Fanny Stone, his first wife, was born in Evesham, Worcestershire in 1853 and baptised at St Lawrence's Church there on 18 November. She was the daughter of William Stone and Hannah Hancock, who were married At All Saints Church, Evesham on 21 October 1834. At the time of the 1861 census Fanny (7) was living in Mill Street, Evesham with her father William (51), who was a journeyman brewer; her mother Hannah (49), who was a laundress; her brothers George (15), who was an errand boy, and Charles Henry (13); and her sister Mary Ann (10). Fanny's father died in 1869 at the age of 59. At the time of the 1871 census Fanny (17) was a pupil teacher, still living at Mill Street, Evesham with her mother Hannah (59), who was still a laundress and her brother George (25), who was a brewer. After a five-year apprenticeship at the Evesham National Girls' School, she received two years' training at Cheltenham Training College, and on 4 January 1875 when she was still only 21 she took charge of St Ebbe's Girls' School in Oxford.

On 10 June 1880 at Christ Church, Sparkbrook, Warwickshire, Joseph Henry Warner married Fanny Stone. At the time of the 1881 census Joseph (27), described as a newspaper reporter, was living at 44 Observatory Street in St Paul's parish with his new wife Fanny. Joseph described himself as a newspaper reporter in that census, and a report in Jackson's Oxford Journal on 2 December 1882 reveals that he was a reporter on the Oxford Times.

Their only child was born later in 1881:

  • Frances Lucy Warner (born at 44 Observatory Street, Oxford on 5 July 1881 and baptised at St Ebbe's Church on 11 August).

At the time of the 1891 census Joseph (37) was living at 9 Juxon Street with his wife Fanny (37) and their daughter Frances (9).

Fanny died three years later in 1894:

† Mrs Fanny Warner née Stone died at 9 Juxon Street at the age of 40 on 7 January 1894 and was buried at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery on 11 January (burial recorded in the parish register of St Paul's Church).

Jane Beatrice Palmer (second wife), born 1861

Jane Beatrice Palmer was born in Stadhampton in early 1861 and was baptised at that church on 22 January 1861. She was the daughter of the dairyman John Timms Palmer, a farmer of Stadhampton, and his wife Eleanor Fowler of Marylebone. Her parents were married at All Souls Church, Marylebone, London on 7 July 1857.

At the time of the 1861 census Jane (three months) was living at her father's 15-acre farm at Stadhampton with her parents and her sisters Agnes (3) and Lizzie (1), and their 11-year-old servant girl. By 1871 when Jane was ten her father was a cattle dealer, and she was living in a private house in Brookhampton with her parents and her siblings Agnes Eleanor (13), Lizzie Marian (11), Frederick John (9), Julia Kate (6), Rose Florence (5), Margaret Louisa (2), and Adelaide Eliza (nine months).

In 1881 Jane (21) was working as a cook at 5 Compton Road, Winchester, the home of an officer's widow and her two daughters.

In 1891 Jane (30) was the housekeeper of the farmer Peter Mattingley and his family at Marsh Baldon. By 1899 Jane's father was farming at Chickshill Farm, Warborough,

On 12 September 1899 at St Lawrence's Church, Warborough, Joseph Henry Warner, described as a widower of St Paul's parish, Oxford, married his second wife Jane Beatrice Palmer, and a notice was inserted in Jackson's Oxford Journal. They do not appear to have had any children.

At the time of the 1901 census Joseph (47) still described himself as a reporter, and he and his second wife Jane (40) were living at 12 Walton Crescent.

By 1911 Joseph described himself as a sub-editor, and they had moved to 104 Southfield Road in east Oxford. He died there in 1921:

† Joseph Henry Warner died at 104 Southfield Road at the age of 67 on 11 April 1921 and was buried at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery on 16 April (burial recorded in the parish register of St Paul's Church).

A photograph published in the Oxford Journal Illustrated on 20 April 1921 (p. 12) shows Joseph Warner's colleagues (presumably at the Oxford Times) carrying his coffin through St Sepulchre’s Cemetery for the funeral.

His second wife Jane died in Abingdon in 1939:

† Mrs Jane Beatrice Warner née Palmer died at Barton Court, Abingdon at the age of 78 on 23 May 1939 and was buried at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery on 26 May (burial recorded in the parish register of St Paul's Church).

Joseph & Fanny Warner's only child, Frances Lucy Warner (born 1881)

At the time of the 1901 census Frances (19) was at St Katherine's teacher training college in Tottenham, London.

In 1911 she was aged 29 and an elementary school teacher, boarding at 22 Chester Road, East Ham, London.

She appears to be the Miss Frances Lucy Warner who died at St Catherine's, Little Heath, Hertfordshire on 23 April 1931 at the age of 49.
