This grave adjoins that of their parents, the Revd Thomas Henry and Sophia Sarah Steel. This plot must have been reserved at the same time as the main grave, as the first person buried here did not live in Oxford

Herbert Greenwood Steel and his sister Sophia Margaret Steel were born at St Ippolyts, Hertfordshire on 14 April 1845 and 20 January 1848 respectively); and his other two sisters buried here, Marion Frances Steel and Helen Bessie Steel (Mrs Pain) were born at Harrow on 1 August 1850 and 7 March 1857 respectively.

They were four of the eight children of Thomas Henry Steel who married Sophia Sarah Harris in the West Derby district on 6 December 1838. From 1837 to 1857 their father was Vicar of St Ippolyts with Great Wymondley in Hertfordshire, and was also Assistant Master at Harrow School from 1836 to 1843 and again from 1849 until 1881.

Herbert Greenwood Steel (born 1845)

Herbert Greenwood Steel never married. At the time of the 1901 census he was aged 55 and living on his own means at a boarding house at 2 New Burlington Street, London.

At the time of his death in 1907 he was staying at Talgarth Hall, Machynlleth, north Wales, the home of his brother Henry:

† Herbert Greenwood Steel died at Talgarth Hall, Machynlleth, north Wales at the age of 62 on 23 June 1907 and was buried at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery on 26 June (burial recorded in the parish register of St Giles’s and probably also Ss Philip & James’s Church).

His effects came to £209 14s. 1d., and his executor was his widowed sister Mrs Matilda Nettleship. His probate records gave his address as the Oriental Club, Hanover Square.


Miss Marion Frances Steel (born 1850)

Marion never married. At the time of the 1881 census she and her sister Sophia were still living with their parents at Harrow. By 1901 the two sisters were living with two servants at 11 Bardwell Road.

Marion moved with her sister to 20 Bradmore Road, and died there in 1923:

† Miss Marion Frances Steel died at 20 Bradmore Road at the age of 72 on 13 February 1923 and was buried at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery on 17 February (burial recorded in the parish register of St Giles’s and probably also Ss Philip & James’s Church).

Her effects came to £1,325 4s. 2d., and her executor was her sister Miss Sophia Margaret Steel.


Mrs Helen Bessie Stuart-Pain, née Steel (born 1857)

On 13 February 1889 at St Giles’s Church, Oxford, Helen Bessie Steel married George Stuart-Pain, the youngest son of the late Henry Pain of Wallop, Hampshire. George was a tea planter, and Helen went with him back to Balijan, Assam. He died at Lakhimpur, Assam on 25 August 1897. Helen does not appear in the 1901 or 1911 censuses, but by the time of her death in 1930 she had returned to England and was living at Hartford Bridge, Hartley Wintney, Hampshire:

† Mrs Helen Bessie Stuart-Pain née Steel died at Elvetham, Hampshire at the age of 72 on 16 February 1930 and was buried at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery on 19 February (burial recorded in the parish register of St Giles’s and probably also Ss Philip & James’s Church).

Her effects came to £202 4s. 3d.


Miss Sophia Margaret Steel (born 1848)

Sophia Margaret Steel never married. At the time of the 1881 census she and her sister Marion were still living with their parents at Harrow. By 1901 the two sisters were living with two servants at 11 Bardwell Road.

Sophia moved with her sister to 20 Bradmore Road, and died there in 1942:

† Miss Sophia Margaret Steel died at 20 Bradmore Road, Oxford at the age of 94 on 24 February 1942 and was buried at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery on 28 February (burial recorded in the parish register of St Giles’s and probably also Ss Philip & James’s Church).

Her death notice in The Times on 28 February 1942 read:

STEEL. — On Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1942, at 20, Bradmore Road, Oxford, SOPHIA MARGARET, last surviving daughter of the late THOMAS HENRY STEEL, of The Grove, Harrow, in her 95th year. Funeral at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery, Oxford, to-day (Saturday), at 11 a.m.

Her effects came to £1,486 2s. 6d., and her executor was her nephew Claud Godfrey Steel, who was a chartered accountant.
