Mary Ann Smith was born at Market End, Bicester on 8 October 1825 and baptised there on 6 November. She was the daughter of John Smith, a glazier, and his wife Elizabeth (probably the John Smith and Elizabeth Ellstone who were married at Bicester Church on 31 March 1823).
Mary Ann had six younger siblings, the first four of whom were baptised at Bicester: Harriet (1828), Charles (1830), John (1832), Thomas (1837), Elizabeth (1838), and Emma (1840).
At the time of the 1841 census Mary Ann’s parents were living at Market End, Bicester with her five youngest siblings. Mary Ann (15) and her sister Harriet (13) were not at home, and may already have been out in service.
By the time of the 1851 census Mary Ann (25) was the house servant in the home of John Bayzand, a retired coachman, and his wife Sarah at 3 St John Street, Oxford. She died at their house in 1854:
† Miss Mary Ann Smith died at St John Street at the age of 29 in 1854 and was buried at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery on 22 December (burial recorded in the parish register of St Mary Magdalen Church).
It seems likely that her employers paid for her grave.
