Thomas Carter was born in Headington in c.1798, according to his recorded age at death, but he may be the Thomas Carter, son of Richard and Ann, who was baptised at St Andrew's Church, Headington on 25 May 1794.

Eliza was born in Oxford in c.1808, according to her age at death. In view of the possible marriage below, she may be the Eliza Winchester who was baptised at St Ebbe's Church on 6 March 1805, the daughter of the college servant John Winchester and his wife Elizabeth, who had seven other children: John (1803), Elizabeth (1811), Susannah (1813), Emma (1815), Thomas (1817), John (1820), and George (1823).

The only marriage in Oxfordshire at the appropriate time between a Thomas Carter and an Eliza appears to be that of Thomas Carter and Eliza Winchester, who were both living in St Ebbe's parish when they were married at its church on 9 October 1825.

In any event, the Thomas and Eliza Carter who are buried in this grave settled in St Mary Magdalen parish where they had eleven children:

  • Catherine or Caroline Carter (born at Crabtree Corner, Oxford in 1826 and baptised at St Mary Magdalen Church on 5 April); died there aged five months and buried in the churchyard 10 April 1826
  • Thomas Carter junior (born at Crabtree Corner, Oxford in 1827 and baptised at St Mary Magdalen Church on 29 August)
  • Harriet Carter (born at Gloucester Green in 1829 and baptised at St Mary Magdalen Church on 20 April); died there aged two and buried in the churchyard on 11 May 1831
  • Eliza Ann Carter (born at Gloucester Green, Oxford in 1831 and baptised at St Mary Magdalen Church on 6 February); died at Friar's Entry  aged two years four months and buried in the churchyard on 10 May 1833)
  • Alice Carter (born at Gloucester Green, Oxford in 1832 and baptised at St Mary Magdalen Church on 11 June); died there aged four and buried in the churchyard on 24 January 1836)
  • Edwin Carter (born at Gloucester Green in 1837 and baptised at St Mary Magdalen Church on 11 March)
  • Selina Carter (born at Gloucester Green in 1839 and baptised at St Mary Magdalen Church on 7 June); died there aged nine and buried on 14 December 1848
  • George Carter (born at Gloucester Green in 1841 and baptised at St Mary Magdalen Church on 10 October)
  • Elisabeth Carter (born at Gloucester Green in 1844 and baptised at St Mary Magdalen Church on 8 April)
  • Mary Ann Carter (born at Gloucester Green in 1848 and baptised at St Mary Magdalen Church on 26 July)
  • Caroline Carter (born at Gloucester Green in 1851 and baptised at St Mary Magdalen Church on 25 July).

At the time of the 1841 census Thomas (43), described as a printer, and Eliza (36) were living at Gloucester Green with their three surviving children Thomas (14), who was also a printer, Edwin (4), and Selina (2). Selina died in December 1848, and she may have been buried in the St Mary Magdalen infants' area in St Sepulchre's Cemetery, which had just opened.

Three more children were born by the time of the 1851 census. Thomas (53), described as a compositor, was then living at 17 Gloucester Green with Eliza (46) and their five surviving children: Thomas (23), who was also a compositor; Edwin (14), George (9), and Elisabeth (7), who were at school; and Mary Ann (2). Their last child Caroline was born soon after that census.

In 1861 Thomas (63), who was still working as a compositor, was living at Gloucester Green with Eliza (56) and their six surviving children: Thomas junior (33), who was a compositor; Edwin (24), who was a solicitor's clerk; George (19), who was a teacher; and Elisabeth (17), Mary Ann (12), and Caroline (9).

Thomas Carter senior died in 1863:

† Thomas Carter died at Gloucester Green at the age of 65 inNovember 1863 and was buried at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery on 14 November (burial recorded in the parish register of St Mary Magdalen Church).

At the time of the 1871 census Eliza (66) was living at Gloucester Green with five of her children: Edwin (34), who was a solicitor's clerk; George (29), who was a tailor; Elisabeth (27), who was a dressmaker employing two people; Mary Ann (22), who was a dressmaker; and Caroline (19), who was a milliner.

Their son Edwin died in 1872:

† Edwin Carter died at Gloucester Green at the age of 35 in July 1872 and was buried at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery on 5 July (burial recorded in the parish register of St Mary Magdalen Church).

In 1881 Eliza (73) was living at 37 Gloucester Green with her youngest son George (39), who was still working as a tailor, and her three youngest daughters: Elisabeth (37, but recorded as 33) was still a dressmaker and now employed three hands; and Mary Ann (32), but recorded as 30), a dressmaker; and Caroline (28), a milliner.

In 1891 Eliza was at home with the same four children, and Caroline was now working as a draper's assistant.

Eliza died in 1898:

† Mrs Eliza Carter died at 37 Gloucester Green at the age of 89 in March 1898 and was buried at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery on 16 March (burial recorded in the parish register of St Mary Magdalen Church).

Their three youngest daughters

Elisabeth, Mary Ann, and Caroline, the three surviving daughters of Thomas & Eliza Carter, who had continued to live with their parents and then their mother until her death in 1898, never married.

Elisabeth (47) and Mary Ann (42) are hard to find in the 1901 census, but their sister Caroline (41) was paying a visit to the Trafford family who lived at 22 East St Helen's Street, Abingdon

Mary Ann died in 1903:

† Miss Mary Ann Carter died at 44 Wellington Square at the age of 54 on 23 February 1903 and was buried at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery on 27 February (burial recorded in the parish register of St Mary Magdalen Church).

The register wrong records her age at death as 48.

At the time of the 1911 census Elisabeth (60) and her sister Caroline (50), who were still working respectively as a dressmaker and a milliner, were living with a servant at 44 Wellington Square.

Caroline died in 1912:

† Miss Caroline Carter died at 36 St John Street at the age of 60 [register says 59] on 27 April 1912 and was buried at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery on 30 April (burial recorded in the parish register of St Mary Magdalen Church).

Elisabeth died in 1922:

† Miss Elisabeth Carter died at St Basil'S Home for Aged Women, 239 Iffley Road, Oxford at the age of 77 on 7 February 1922 and was buried at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery on 10 February (burial recorded in the parish register of St Mary Magdalen Church).

Her effects came to £159 5s., and her executor was Mrs Bessie Ballard.

The remaining children of Thomas & Eliza Carter
  • Thomas Carter (born 1827), who was a compositor and still living with his parents in 1861, is hard to trace after that date.
  • George Carter (born 1841), who was still living with his mother in 1891, never married. In 1901 George (60) was still working as a tailor and boarding at 25 Rectory Road (then called Pembroke Street) in east Oxford with the family of a tailor called William Berry. In 1911 when he was 70 he was an inmate of the Cowley Road Workhouse. He is probably the George Carter who died in the Headington registration district in 1916.
