William Dukinfield Astley was born in Wales in 1826/7, the fourth son of John William Astley of Mallwyd, Montgomeryshire. He was matriculated at the University of Oxford from Jesus College on 12 February 1846, aged 18.
He died 2½ years later, before completing his degree:
† William Dukinfield Astley died at Jesus College at the age of 21 on 30 November 1848 and was buried at St Sepulchre’s Cemetery on 2 December (burial recorded in the parish register of St Michael’s Church).
The following death noticed appeared in Jackson’s Oxford Journal on 2 December 1848: “On Thursday last, aged 21, after a painful illness, which he endured with truly Christian patience, William Dukinfield Astley, of Jesus college. He was deeply beloved and lamented.”
This is one of the earliest burials in the cemetery, which was consecrated on 23 September 1848.
